Describe any significant experience outside your home country. What did you gain from these ? (150 words)
In 1996, as project manager representing Japan’s Fujitsu Company, I was responsible for a 6-month training program of 50 Chinese workers in Japan. In the middle of the training, the alarming increase in the substandard and defective products resulted in an argument between me and my Japanese boss Mr. Abe. He emphasized the trainees’ lack of technical dexterity while I pointed to Chinese trainees’ resistance to the arbitrary manner of the Japanese way of management, which demanded implicit obedience. Knowing that quarrel could only worsen the matter, I took the initiative to communicate with Mr. Abe who came to realize his over-demanding character. On my part, I reminded my fellow countrymen of the need to adapt. As a result, the yield improved significantly. This event heightened my awareness of effective management, realizing that different cultural backgrounds would bring about different work attitude. Today, against the backdrop of globalization, those differences must be treated cautiously and the solution lies in communication. Open-mindedness and receptivity to different cultural values will help one integrate internationally.
