Personal Statement

Applicant: Chen x xProgram: Electrical Engineering

I was most fortunate to enter Beijing Institute of Technology (BIT), a leading university situated in the heart of China’s Silicon Valley—Zhongguancun. This was crucial in shaping my interest in electrical engineering because one cannot fail to be surrounded by latest information technologies, especially communication network and mobile communication involving visual and auditory signal processing. This plunge into an IT-dominated environment coincided with my early experiences with electrical engineering—opening all kinds of electrical gadgets to discover their inner secrets as a child, enjoying the conveniences of digital products in my middle school, and conceiving the determination to design the most powerful mobile phone in the world. In the dynamic and stimulating academic environment of BIT, I chose to study at its strongest faculty—the Department of Electrical Engineering, and with this critical choice, I became initiated into a vibrant and rapidly growing field.

Cherishing all the good opportunities brought by my well-considered decision, I have had a most rewarding undergraduate career. In doing my academic studies, I have derived infinite inspiration from Steve Jobs, the creator of the Apple computer. While at college, Jobs studied an apparently useless course of “the art of calligraphy” but this helped him to design the unique appearances of the Apple computers and their interfaces. This example convinced me that all knowledge we acquire would prove useful sooner or later, in one way or another. Therefore, I studied all the courses with tremendous interest, even though some of them appeared to be not so interesting, like such mathematics courses as probability, mathematical statistics, linear algebra, and stochastic processes. As a result, I achieved a very satisfactory GPA of x x x, winning Level-II scholarships for academic excellence for three consecutive years. Of course, I was most fascinated by those experiment courses where I can improve my hands-on abilities. With the help of a single-board computer, I designed a functional digital product. It was great fun working in a team of smart minds—mutual cooperation and trust would fill me with a strong sense of success and achievement.

With my acquired knowledge and skills, I am currently engaged in research at a national key laboratory based in our university—the National Lab of Signal Collection and Signal Processing. Under the guidance of Prof. Li x x , our group is working o the project Digital Trunked Mobile Communication System and I am proud of being one of the four undergraduates recruited into the team. The project is designed to develop an all-digital semi-virtual simulation platform of communication system, based on which to simulate digital trunked system of TETRA, TEDS and 3G/B3G-based technologies. In this project, my responsibility is to develop the all-digital simulation platform based on Windows and Telelogic TAU G2; for data compression, LZW code and V.42BIS algorithm are used.

This marked a defining experience that turned me into a research student. What I benefitted from it is that I have learned how to seek effective solutions to difficult problems and improve my own expertise. I witnessed how senior researchers perform perceptive analysis, understand a difficult concept, verify or challenge a particular methodology. I realized that doing research can be great fun.

Now, as I am to complete my undergraduate program, I am determined to extend my research career by pursuing an advanced graduate program in electrical engineering. I hope to continue my research in the field of communication and signal processing, which will remain vital technologies in the new millennium. The paramount importance of those technologies convinces me that a lifelong career in the field would accord perfectly with my career aspirations. What’s more, such a career perfectly agrees with the two major criteria that I have developed for choosing a career path—value and pleasure. I believe that, by accomplishing a steadily developing career, I can achieve full and meaningful self-actualization. This is especially as I have already formulated a well-considered study plan in the following two major areas.

The first major area that I would concentrate on in my proposed graduate program is image and video signal process. In the field of the fast-moving mobile communication, there have been rapid changes brought by the development of new fangled ideas and exciting technologies, the crystallization of human ingenuity and wisdom. It would simply be wonderful to be involved in scientific endeavors that are aimed at pushing behind the boundaries of human creativity. For me, I have a special foundation for entering this field—my strong aptitudes in mathematics can be a good qualification. With my strong interest in mathematics since my elementary school, I have developed a solid basis in the subject through rigorous and substantial training during the high school and the undergraduate program. This will enable me to excel in a field which requires strong mathematics skills. For doing research in image and audio signal processing, my mathematics knowledge features matrix algebra, probability, stochastic processes, Fourier analysis, etc. In my past research, I have demonstrated other necessary skills—using LZW code and V.42BIS algorithm for data compression.

My second concentration would be on communication network, specifically in mobile network, interactive communication and multicasting transmission protocol. I am interested in public communication network and multi-channel mobile communication system. The specialized digital trunked communication system is a useful supplement to public communication network, with its emphasis on group calling, broadcasting calling, emergency calling, forced interruption and insertion, and prioritized calling to realize effective scheduling and commanding. In the future, government departments would increasingly rely on specialized mobile communication system to deal with emergent public events like earthquakes and snowstorms, which would result in partial or complete dysfunction of public mobile communication networks. As an emergency measure, digital trunked system which can be activated more speedily is needed. This is an important field of study for public security and my research so far in this field has already allowed me to acquire the theoretical framework and practical experiences needed for further research.

Having formulated my research objectives, I believe that many of my personal qualities would make me a good scientist. With my perseverance and stamina, I can remain consistently committed to my endeavors. According to my mother, in my preschool years, while other small girls were engrossed with playing with Barbie dolls, I would spend hours arranging and rearranging dozens of paper boxes of all sizes and shapes into different geometric configurations. By making dedicated efforts, I have been playing the flute since I was nine, receiving major prizes in national and provincial competitions. Playing music has produced an incredible effect on me, not only expanding my imaginative faculty but also heightening my sensitivity of inquiring observation. Music has also motivated me into working for the public welfare—I acted as director of our university’s student symphony orchestra and as guest flute player in the x x x City Philharmonic Orchestra, involved in more than two dozens of campus concerts. This unique experience has helped me develop a strong sense of responsibility and teamwork. I have become proactive, drawing useful lessons from setbacks, attentive to criticisms by others, respecting and understanding.

Motivated by my long-cherished aspiration to become an accomplished scientist, I hope to enter the University of x x x at x x x where, through a world-class graduate program, to acquire cutting-edge knowledge and skills. The rigorous academic and research training will enable me to fulfill my ultimate career success in my chosen field. The abbreviation of your university, U and I, when the former is placed on top of the latter, is a goblet to be filled with champagne for success celebration. I am very much impressed by this emblem and I would like to follow the footsteps of many of distinguished Chinese scientists who are closely associated with x x x , Hua xxx, Zhu xxx, and Dr. Fu xxx, the originator of Pattern Recognition. I hope that in the due course I can create my own success story with the unparalleled academic training at XXX.

I hope that, in this personal statement, I have impressed you with accounts about who I am, what I have achieved, and how I would prepare for the future. Now, I stand ready to become part of your outstanding academic community in pursuit of my academic and personal success.
