As an aspiring student with well-defined objectives, I have studied accounting and finance with profound intellectual curiosity and commitment. I have achieved a high level of excellence through a most rewarding joint undergraduate programme between XXX University of Finance and Economics (China) and the University of XXX (UK). Compared with ordinary Chinese applicants, I am very proud of myself for the obvious competitive edges I’ve gained by having met the most rigorous challenges in a most intensive and demanding academic environment of a leading UK institution. My overall academic background has prepared me perfectly for your MSc programme. I have studied a whole array of specialized courses in finance, corporate finance, economics, accounting, marketing, and management. Through courses ranging from calculus, statistics, linear algebra, probability and mathematical statistics, database management, computer science to management information system, I have honed my quantitative and computer skills. Being heavily quantitative and analytical in nature, your MSc Finance programme places strong emphasis on knowledge and skills across diverse fields such as mathematics, statistics, finance, economics, and accounting. In view of this comprehensive emphasis, I believe that my many-faceted backgrounds would make me a perfect match for your MSc.

At XXX University (UK), I proved my scholastic aptitudes by obtaining First-class Honours and Dean’s Commendation, expanding my knowledge base in accounting and finance by through core courses like financial accounting, audit, management accounting, accounting models for management decision, and statistics for business and management. Five more courses in the final year—taxation, financial management, corporate law, financial reporting and analysis, corporate governance, accountability and audit—would make my academic foundation as comprehensive as it is in-depth.

My studies in the UK have yielded three vital benefits. Extensive case studies, combining theories with practical issues, have improved my skills in quantitative reasoning and in integrating qualitative evidence from various sources. In group work, I have done huge amount of independent study required for preparing reports and enhanced my research caliber in collecting, classifying and assimilating useful data to seek effective solutions. Being proactive, I have served as team leader in group projects, improving my leadership and organizing skills. Cross-cultural communication, coordination, and teamwork are among many valuable qualities developed. Those are the achievements I feel most proud of.

Aware of the importance of real-world experiences, I have undertaken summer internships. At XXX Bank, China’s major commercial bank, I interned as assistant manager and was exposed to credit and loan business and I acquired knowledge and skills in risk analysis involved in issuing loans to enterprises. Then, at XXX Electronics & Specialty Gases (Suzhou) Co., Ltd, I interned as senior accountant assistant and became very interested in applying my knowledge in management accounting. In helping preparing the company’s monthly statements and financial reports as assistant accountant, I used absorption cost and variable cost to analyze variations in the final profit and their effects on income statement. I realized how a sound financial system of a company functions as a locomotive in promoting an enterprise’s continuous improvement. Those two internships gave me insider’s knowledge of the internal financial operations and in my future investment banking profession I would be well-equipped for looking into corporate financial statements and performing rigorous auditing that could provide a firm basis for potential investment projects.

In both China and the UK, I have been actively involved in extracurricular events—blood donation, freshmen orientation, and various volunteer activities and community actions as a member of University of XXX Students’ Guild. The most important experience is that I have applied for a volunteer position at the 2012 London Olympic Games and I have been given an interview. In undertaking those activities, I have performed my social responsibility and I have realized that, as a future financial professional, to perform social responsibility is as important to me as professional expertise.
