  • As a computer science major as well as a support engineer, the applicant has showed some technical background in the field of computer programming. In addition, as evidenced by the candidate’s excellent academic performance both in the underground and graduate level as an actuarial science major from a US institution, he/she has involved in intensive training of mathematics, especially those heavily used in Finance, like probability and risk theory, mathematical models in understanding impact of various events on valuation of the securities involving pension, insurance etc. Therefore, the applicant makes him a highly potential candidate in the eyes of admission officers from the top Finance Departments across US.

  • 我们根据其背景给他进行了初步职业规划:

  • Possible future career paths may include investment portfolio manager, security trading professional, financial analyst, investment banker which specializes in financial asset pricing, all calling for a tradeoff between risk and return. Although there has been signs of global economic recovery ever since the financial meltdown, the path to fully recovery is still uncertain and the speed still slow. However, this difficulty does not stop employers from recruiting from the top finance programs. Indeed, what they are looking for now is the ones who can demonstrate a genuine understanding of risks and a taste for the fundamentals, a sharp shift from the old days when everyone’s talking about derivatives and nobody was interested in truly gauging the underlying risks of certain investments. Then suddenly the global financial crisis…

  • 我们给其初步的学校和专业定位是 :

  • Recommendation therefore is for the candidate to target schools among top10-20. Universities within this rage are Michigan, Rochester, Carnegie Mallon, Cornell, USC among others, according to the 2010 US News ranking of top finance programs of the US b-schools.

  • On the other hand, the candidate could also consider MBA programs. Specifically, since the candidate is lacking any solid professional and leadership experience, he/she may be at a disadvantage when competing with other candidates for the top MBA programs. Although the candidate has involved in a variety of extracurricular activities, none of them demonstrated intensive leadership skills until proved otherwise. However, our experience shows that candidates with similar background and GMAT scores could shoot for the top 25-50 MBA programs. Indeed, some of these MBA programs are pretty strong in finance and can prepare students for a successful career in the industry. These programs are like Maryland, Iowa, Florida and Boston College. For some, like Iowa’s Tippie MBA even provides candidates with generous amount of scholarships.

  • 我们还从自身经历给该申请者一些另外的建议 :

  • A few more words: we used to know of a Chinese guy who got accepted into the financial engineering program at Cornell which is very quantitative-oriented. Prior to that, he has a MS in Finance from U of Arizona and got a year’s experience as a pension fund manager in Arizona. Now he is a financial analyst with a major global investment bank and is currently based in Hong Kong. He warned that before the crisis the industry focused too much on the quantitative aspect of finance and people in the industry were too narrow-minded and aggressive in their approach to risks. Now there is a major shift to the fundamentals of finance and people learned the hard lesson that excessive returns do associate with higher risks. With that being said, the message is that although there is still chances in the job market for candidate with intensive quantitative training in finance, the view toward it may has really changed.
