One of my most rewarding volunteer experiences occurred while I was living in Japan. On January 17, 1995 a major earthquake occurred near Hanshin, Japan, affecting 450,000 households. I volunteered with a local aid group that was responsible for providing earthquake information and help to foreigners living in Japan. My job was to translate the information into Chinese for those Chinese-speaking victims of the earthquake. The work was urgent – the resulting newsletter needed to be put out immediately to help those who were most affected by the disaster. The purpose was to make sure that even foreign victims could receive information and rescue help if they needed it.

Information was constantly being updated and therefore constantly in need of translation. Those that badly needed help needed it around the clock, twenty-four hours a day. It was especially important as the panic and fear of the foreigners was much greater than that of the local Japanese due to the language barrier. Although I could not get enough rest and the work was strenuous and exhausting, I found it to be a very rewarding experience. To give people badly needed help under such horrendous conditions is one of my greatest accomplishments.
