Before I even met her, I had heard much of this young lady. Ms. XXX is known to be someone who excelled in academics, was known in research, and who frequently attended academic conferences. However, I did not realize how good she was until I attended her thesis defense. Her study showed that the neutral lipid isolated from the endosperm of Job’s Tears inhibits the growth of pancreatic cancer cells.

As head of the panel of evaluators, I was very impressed by the way she answered our questions and her knowledge of the subject matter. For instance, when asked to comment on the fact that many research documents state that oncoma stems from fatty diet, she did affirm the close relationship between oncoma and fat, particularly saturated fat. On the other hand, she also clearly pointed out that the main elements extracted from the endosperm of Job’s Tears are unsaturated fatty acid and upon analysis, had anti-cancer properties. I am proud to say that her thesis defense was one of the best I had ever heard in so many years of teaching.

In September 2004, Ms. XXX was invited and sponsored by the organizers of the European Annual Conference on Digestion to present her thesis during the 12th United European Gastroenterology Week in Prague. Her fluent English and clear, complete, and straightforward answers to questions posed by other professionals impressed the participants so much that even the president of the branch meeting said, “I am very glad to see a young lady from China give such an excellent report.” Instances like this, where her technical knowledge and English proficiency is shown, firmly support my belief that Ms. XXX is well qualified for advanced studies abroad.

With her excellent academic achievements and outstanding research skills, Ms. XXX won the chance to work in our hospital. Through more contacts with her, I discovered that aside from her high level of professionalism, she also has a strong sense of responsibility which is very important among our medical staff. Having seen the suffering of the sick, Ms. XXX decided to go abroad to study epidemiology, especially oncoma epidemiology, and explore effective methods against pathogenic factors for the prevention of diseases.
