The revolutionary nature of the Internet seems to render it omnipotent in transforming all aspects of the life of modern people. While many argue that college students should concentrate on their academic studies and avoid online shopping as much as possible as it diverts much of their time and energy, I contend that online shopping is suitable for college students in many important ways.
Online shopping is a product of modern civilization, a mode of modern existence whose impact on people, including college students, is irresistible. As part of modern society, college students should become accustomed to this pattern of modern existence and make necessary preparations for their future life. Like all the other ordinary consumers, college students have genuine needs for necessities in their life and studies and online shopping, with its cheaper prices, greater efficiency, and richer varieties, is precisely geared to the needs of students with limited budgets and limited spare time. Online shopping can develop innocent students into mature consumers because they can make extensive comparisons among a wealth of commodities ready for them to choose from. Finally, online shopping itself is a form of business which many college students can engage in. For college graduates who face unprecedented employment pressure on the job market, to launch their own online businesses would provide an alternate route to employment and to career success.
College students account for an important proportion of consumers in China. By making full use of online shopping, students can effectively answer to the government’s call to stimulate domestic consumption and contribute to domestic economic growth. Some students can become successful entrepreneurs of online businesses, with Ma Yun and his taobao.com as a perfect example. In this way, online shopping can become conducive both to students themselves and to the society as a whole.

大学生占了中国消费者群体中相当大的一个比例。通过充分利用网上购物，学生们可以有效地响应政府的号召，刺激国内消费，促进国内经济增长。有些学生还可以成为网上业务的成功企业家，马云及其淘宝网就是一个完美的范例。如此一来，网上购物无论对于学生们自身，还是对于整个社会，都将带来裨益。 |
