What are your reasons for applying for the course you wish to study? Explain how it will help your career and personal development on your return to your home country. Try to do this in no more than 500 words.

My application for your LLM program is motivated by crucial reasons. With academic training in International XXX Law as an undergraduate and in XXX and XXX Law as a graduate, I have a sound academic foundation to excel in your LLM program as I excelled in two previous programs (achieving high GPAs and publishing research papers). Academically, I also feel it necessary to expand and update my knowledge of law so that I keep abreast with the latest developments in legal education, especially in the U.K., which can be borrowed for solving legal problems in my home country.

When I commenced my professional career three years ago as president’s assistant at XXX Foundation, I already started to acquire international experiences and perspectives. I launched economic, cultural and educational exchanges between the two countries and organized several international forums participated by former US Present XXX and other senior officials from both China and U.S. As my job did not involve much legal responsibilities which I loved to perform, I then joined Beijing XXX International Co., LTD (BXXX), the world’s Top-XXX international contractors and China’s Top-500 enterprise which is the leading contractor of the venues of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. I began as xxx and was then promoted to the position of Legal Supervisor at the XXX Legal Department. My responsibilities include participating in negotiations, preparing and signing contracts in English with international employers, handling all the legal affairs incurred by the corporation, and participate in decision-making process of the top management.

To undertake the proposed LLM program is out of the need of my personal development and the development of our organization, which I will continue to work with after the LLM program. Despite its prestige in the industry inside China, BXXX has been experiencing major challenges when trying to expand its international businesses. Advanced technologies are difficult to export and thus suffer from a low international recognition. Its low competitiveness in the overseas market results in few successes in the biddings for overseas projects. BXXX is not sufficiently knowledgeable about operation patterns of international capital and international conventions, thus unable to participate effectively in international competitions.

By learning International Banking and Financial Law, Corporate Governance, and Corporate Finance L aw and many related subjects, I will contribute to BXXX’s transformation from a state-owned enterprise into a modern corporate organization which is integrated with the international conventions of the corporate governance. I will be able to furnish my legal opinions to BXXX’s board of directors and top management. Secondly, I wish to contribute to project financing. Despite BXXX’s ability to undertake construction projects worth billions or even dozens of billion dollars, it is unable to finance such projects for not knowing how international capitals operate and how to make use of international bank credit. Finally, BXXX has to study how to become a listed company itself in order to achieve its own development. I believe in the near future BXXX will work out all those challenges and, as its present legal supervisor, I will most likely end up in its top management who can play a crucial role in its future growth.

Please provide an outline of your ambitions and career plans. How do you intend to “make a difference” in your country? Try to do this in no more than 250 words.

Upon completing my LLM program, I wish to seek internship by entering a leading law firm which specifically works in the field of providing legal consulting to corporations interested in establishing modern corporate governance and in becoming a listed company. I will familiarize myself with all the workflow of providing legal services, including the procedures in developing the corporation’s organization, becoming listed on the stock market, doing financing and investment, merging, etc.

Within two years, I will return to BXXX, my present employer, to promote its overseas business expansion and to promote its transformation into a listed company operating in strict accordance with the standards of modern corporate governance. I will facilitate its financing on the international capital market with my legal support and make it operate as leading multinational corporations do and participate effectively in international competition.

Within five years, I wish to become a senior manager of the XXX Legal Department and within ten years fight my way into the top management of BXXX. I will be innovative, aspiring, aggressive and committed to organizational reform and change. In this age of globalization, corporate organization must quickly and effective adapt to the rapidly changing conditions. I am determined to make BXXX’s transformation into a major success and set it as an example for hundreds and thousands of Chinese state-owned enterprises for follow. With this triumph of the rule of law, the law of corporate governance and corporate financing, an increasing number of leading Chinese corporations will enter international arena and China will assume an increasingly important role in world affairs in a constructive and responsible manner.

Chevening is unique in that it looks for future leaders, who can use their influence and standing to bring benefits to their communities and countries. Describe your most outstanding non-academic achievement where you demonstrated leadership potential. It should involve other people, and it may be an extra-curricular/sport/community/professional activity or an assignment. Try to do this in no more than 250 words.

Throughout my professional career at BXXX, with the marked improvement in my leadership skills, I had one rare opportunity to assume an independent leadership role. To reduce the cost of the 29th Beijing Olympic Games in 2008, the organizing committee decided to construct 80,000M2 of temporary accommodations. As a leading construction contractor in Beijing, BXXX won the bid. However, as project leader, I know what challenges I had to undergo before success was achieved.

Through highly efficient searching, my group members and I targeted at the XXX Group in Holland, which is the worldwide market leader in providing temporary accommodations. Then we established contact with XXX and soon set out on a business trip to XXX headquarters to witness its design and production strengths, which was immediately followed by an field trip to Doha where we inspected the temporary facilities and accommodations XXX set up for the 2006 Asian Games Doha. Finally, we signed a joint venture agreement with XXX, called Consortium XXX, and formulated the consortium’s strategic goal of business cooperation beyond the 2008 Olympic Games. competition.

The most difficult part was filing our bidding with the organizing committee. To dispel the doubts about its technical feasibility, we held press conferences, answered journalists’ questions by the use of PPT, and we invited XXX’s experts to explain and give technical training, and allowed interested visitors to experience the facilities. On my part, I collected huge amounts of data and did substantial amount of translation.

As project leader, I am proud of this successful leadership experience. Essentially, leadership consists of a rigorous plan, full preparations, resolute implementation, necessary compromises for long-term collaboration, and goal-oriented perseverance. Through this experience, I believe my leadership potential is virtually unlimited.
