I am the kind of person who, in search for the highest level of academic and professional excellence, never ceases to make concrete and effective efforts toward self-improvement and professional progress. Academically, not contented with the Bachelor’s degree in accounting that I obtained from my undergraduate programme at XXXXX Institute, I went on to pursue a Master’s degree in Finance, concentrating on Insurance, at Central University of Finance and Economics (the best institution of its kind in China) from 20XX to 20XX. As I came to face increasingly complicated management challenges in my career, I realized that even the knowledge and the skills from this Master’s programme were far from sufficient. Therefore, since September 20XX, I have been working on a part-time MBA programme at China Renmin University (CRU) which is the country’s most prestigious university in social sciences and management. All those conscientious academic endeavors testify to my strong sense of urgency and the readiness to take necessary steps to fulfill my objectives.

My professional career has unfolded in investment and insurance. Having worked as assistant general manager at an investment management company (20XX-20XX) and then as general manager of a department at an insurance brokering company (20XX-20XX), I accumulated valuable managerial experiences and skills, which perfectly prepared me for a career at Insurance Association of China (IAC). IAC, established in 2001 under the approval of China Insurance Regulatory Commission (CIRC), is an organization whose mission is, apart from imposing self-discipline and safeguarding the rights and interests of all the members of the association, is to promote services and international exchanges. At present, IAC has 176 members, featuring 105 insurance companies and 36 intermediaries, as well as 35 local insurance associations. As a national organization, IAC plays a key role in promoting the development of China’s insurance industry and exchanges with developed countries in the West.

Currently, I am working as deputy director of the Training and Authentication Department. It is a key division of IAC because it is responsible for organizing and implementing the qualifying examinations of all the insurance practitioners in China. Toward this objective, the Department is responsible for formulating all the professional training plans and putting those specific plans into practice. As China’s insurance industry has been late to develop, it is imperative for China to learn from its international counterparts. In addition, as an integral part of the global insurance market, it is important for China to conform to international practices and standards. Therefore, our training and authentication programmes have been carried out largely in collaboration with leading international insurance associations and institutions, many of which are from the UK like Lloyd’s.

Insurance is an important part of finance and after so many years China has been opening its financial market to the international community, insurance has been growing into a major field in which foreign capitals, particularly British companies, are invited to operate businesses. The significance of our training and authentication is that, by developing an increasing number of well-qualified insurance professionals, we will not only greatly enhance the quality of insurance services and expand the scope and the scale of insurances business across the country. The key fact is that in our training and qualification authentication, we will borrow British standards; hence, British insurance companies will have the greatest opportunities to benefit from the Sino-British cooperation in insurance industry.

According to the Vision for the Insurance Industry in 2020, a report from the insurance industry working group released by British government, the next ten years will be the golden period for the development of China’s insurance company. The Chinese government has identified insurance as a strategic industry for national development and has required insurance companies to be more deeply engaged in providing pension and social security services so that they can contribute more to national economic development, especially to the development in the vast rural areas. Nevertheless, as pointed above, the insurance industry has been largely under-developed in China—among 1.3 billion Chinese population, only one out of seven people has an insurance. Compared with western countries, both the insurance density and penetration are extremely low. As the insurance is the first industry of China’s financial market to be opened to global investors when China assumed its WTO membership in 2001, the industry has been experiencing rapid development over the past decade and promises to achieve even more spectacular growth in the future. As an unlimited market, insurance industry will provide unlimited room for my personal and professional development and it poses both tremendous opportunities and challenges that make it necessary for me to seek a comprehensive education in insurance and management in the UK through the Chevening Scholarship Programme.

Should I have the honour of being qualified for the Chevening Scholarship Programme, I would like to study Insurance, Finance and Management at a leading business school in the UK, such as CASS Business School in London. It is true that I have studied accounting and insurance during my undergraduate programme and in a part-time Master’s programme at Central University of Finance and Economics, and am now studying finance and business administration through an MBA programme at China Renmin University, the knowledge I have gained is very basic and unsystematic, seriously lacking international dimension. To deepen the international cooperation in insurance, I need to gain advanced knowledge about western insurance and finance. The insights I gain will help me to do a much better job in introducing advanced British experiences and management patterns into China to enhance China’s insurance industry. This is definitely the most compelling reason why I am so strongly interested in the Chevening Scholarship Programme.

To enhance the professional quality of the insurance practitioners has always been my paramount concern. By the end of 20XX, there have been 3 million insurance practitioners in China. To furnish timely and first-rate training and qualification authentication will be vital to the healthy development of the industry. Therefore, my second important objective is to, while studying in the UK, gain direct understanding of the British insurance community, to establish extensive working relationships with leading insurance companies and authentication institutions like the Chartered Insurance Institute and bring them into close cooperation with China’s insurance world.

As the future director of the Training and Authentication Department of IAC, I will assume comprehensive responsibilities to organize training and authentication programmes. It will be a major challenge as more and more practitioners enter the insurance professor and new fields of insurances are developed. To enhance my professional competence and leadership skills, I need to study cutting-edge management knowledge in the UK, to understand organizational behavior and corporate governance in the rapidly changing business world. In this way, I can improve my skills in managing my Department by developing short-term and long-term strategies, to acquire broad vision in anticipation for the burgeoning development of China’s insurance industry, with the input from Western countries. Mostly importantly, through the Chevening Scholarship Programme, I will develop international experiences and perspectives which are so essential in this age of globalization when China develops ever closer economic ties with the international community.

Upon my return to China, I have ambitious plans for my career. The knowledge I acquire from my studies and the contacts I establish with my British counterparts would definitely boost my leadership abilities, resulting in promotions and career advancements. As I have pointed out, I will strive to become the director of our department in the near future, which will put me into a better position to develop comprehensive strategies and plans to launch training and authentication programmes. The international training and authentication programmes can be two-directional: inviting British and European specialists to offer training and authentication programmes in China, or identifying qualified British and European institutions as training bases for Chinese insurances practitioners to receive training and authentication there. Promising managers and distinguished professionals were to be selected, from all the major cities and provinces across China. Though the training and authentication processes, British and European institutions may come into direct contact with the most important proportion of Chinese insurance personnel and vast business opportunities would be generated. With accumulated achievements, I am determined to fight my way to the position of the assistant general secretary of IAC, capable of coordinating and leading all the departments in concerted efforts to enhance the professional qualities of the entire insurance personnel in this country, who are the most critical factor in ensuring the prosperity of the industry.

I am convinced that I am in possession of important leadership qualities, not only in extracurricular activities during my undergraduate programme but also throughout my work at IAC. Some of those valuable qualities will help me continually improve my leadership skills and make me a high-achieving leader capable of producing effective changes and growth within my organization.

At XXXXX Institute, I was the vice chairman of the institute’s Student Union. As the most influential student organization on the campus, the student union played an important role in enriching student life and campus diversity. As vice chairman, I worked closely with the chairman and heads of individual departments in productive and effective teamwork to launch a whole range of interesting extracurricular activities. Those include intercollegiate sports competitions, art festivals, speech and debate contests, student entrepreneurships, publicity campaigns for environmental protection, voluntary services at local communities, charity fundraising and blood donations, etc.

I would like to describe my most outstanding achievement involving other people where I demonstrated full leadership potential. In one of the summer vacations, I organized a team consisting of 10 members and went on field trips into four neighboring provinces to investigate the conditions of primary and secondary education in rural areas. We went on bicycles and covered a total distance of 1500 kilometers. Along our journey, apart from offering volunteer service of teaching school kids, we studied how the distribution of government funds have affected the quality of education, the morale of instructors, and the opportunities for students to gain further developments. By interviewing teachers and students, visiting students’ parents in their households, and issuing questionnaires, we learned how insufficient capital input from local government limited students’ access to high-quality education, lowered their self-esteem, and undermined their personal initiatives. Back from our journey, we prepared a full-length investigation report detailing the disadvantages that deprive rural students of their equal right to education and personal development, calling on the governments to take concrete measures to address those issues because only by making sound education accessible to the younger generation there would it be possible for them to change the underdeveloped conditions of their communities.

In leading this project to achieve a complete success, I realized that how a person of a strong sense of social responsibility may help to make a difference in this world. There are so many social groups of unprivileged people in present-day China and as students we should not be solely concerned with our own studies but should be strongly aware of our social problems and take concrete steps to help address them. With strong concern and care for those fortunate people, we can enhance social justice and equality, and improve the general well-being of the public. For my distinguished extracurricular achievements, I was awarded the honor of “The Outstanding Individual of Jiangxi Province for Social Practice”, which is the highest honor issued by the provincial municipality to only a limited number of college students in the entire province.

By exercising effective leadership, I have been responsible for launching dozens of training and authentication projects each year. In fulfilling my responsibilities as a leader at IAC, I have always been determined to contribute to the development of China’s insurance industry and make it an effective means to enhance the general welfare of the Chinese people. As I understand it, leadership is always about serving the other people, enhancing their welfare, and creating a better world. It is never a power to satisfy one’s self-interests.
