说明:该Chevening申请者成功获得Chevening奖学金,并进入Cambridge Judge Business School 攻读MBA;之后又申请欧洲大陆一所顶级金融学院PhD in Finance。

1. Describe the capacity in which you knew the applicant:

I made my acquaintance with Miss XXX in 20XX, the year she graduated from the University of International Business and Economics. From March to May, she worked on her graduation thesis and I had the honor to be her advisor. She contacted me regularly throughout her thesis project and we had full communications with each other. Therefore, I developed a very close understanding of Miss XXX both as a student and as a person.

2. Is the applicant still with your organization? Yes/No. If not, when did he/she leave?

The applicant left our university after gaining her Bachelor’s degree and graduated in the summer of 20XX. With her superb training in business, finance, and economics, she succeeded in finding employment in the investment industry and securing a high-achieving career.

3. Please detail any personal circumstances which might affect the applicant’s performance on an intensive and demanding programme.

Miss XXX has no personal circumstances that might affect her performance, however intensive and demanding the programme might be. She is energetic and dynamic. During her undergraduate programme here, she was used to handling heavy amount of coursework and still being able to achieve outstanding performance in her coursework. In addition, her thesis project was a major undertaking. Unlike most other students, she wrote the thesis in English. It was a great challenge as she was not an English major. Nevertheless, she kept improving both the content of the thesis and the use of English. Finally, her 7,000-word thesis was highly evaluated by the academic committee.

4. Describe the applicant’s strengths and weaknesses.

In undertaking her thesis project, Miss XXX has demonstrated many valuable academic qualities. First, she developed a most strong and firm academic foundation through four years of intensive and rigorous training, covering such fields as international trade, international finance, international economy, econometrics, macro and microeconomics. Her overall GPA reached 3.3/4.0, which was quite above the average. In addition, she also acquired useful skills in performing economic analysis. Over the years, she kept herself well informed of all the important developments in global economy and was able to apply relevant knowledge and theories to specific problems. All those laid a perfect foundation for her to come up with a wonderful thesis which considered impressed the Panel of Judges who rated it as the “Excellent Graduation Thesis” of the year, an award which was limited to only top 5% of the outstanding students. Entitled “Analysis on Sino-U.S. Trade Imbalance and its Benefits”, the thesis has been published on "Foreign Investment in China" (05/20XX). This fully indicates the extent of research skills to which Miss XXX has attained.

Although written in 20XX, Miss XXX’s thesis is still highly relevant to the present-day global economy because, with her acute and perceptive judgment she chose to focus on the trade imbalance between China and the United States, performing in-depth analysis of the underlying reasons and discussed such possible solutions as the reduction of deficit for U.S. and the appreciation of RMB for China, as well as comprehensive coordination on the policy level between the two countries. The thesis was marvelously written as it incorporates a substantial amount of scholarly materials by both American and Chinese authors. In addition, Miss XXX kept modifying and improving it with latest information. She proposed many original and incisive perspectives and demonstrated strong ability to carry out critical analysis, to go beyond surfaces and reach profound conclusions. Compared with most of her fellow students, Miss XXX was quite distinguished in terms of developing her research caliber. This scholarly quality will be crucial to her in her proposed studies in the UK as she will have to take more advanced courses and undertake much scholarly research. I have absolute confidence that she would complete her degree programme with great success.

Of course, as an undergraduate, Miss XXX could only focus her research on rather broad issues and perform some rather general analysis. In order to delve really deep into the heart of the problems, much more advanced studies would be needed. In addition, it is also important to add weight to one’s analysis by means of quantitative analysis. It is equally important to gather empirical statistics. I believe that over the past few years of her work, Miss XXX has been expanding her knowledge about China’s domestic market as well as about the international market and her real-world knowledge and experiences would significantly enhance her insights and contribute to her future research.

5. Please comment on any task, project or other situation in which the applicant has been involved which may demonstrate his or her potential a manager or a responsible team member?

During her undergraduate career at our university, Miss XXX not only did a wonderful job in her academic studies but also performed many important and valuable extracurricular responsibilities. She advocated the International Trade Academy Association and was the chief of the Sport Dept. of the Students’ Union. By taking an active part in those two organizations, she played a vital role of leadership that added important diversity to the campus life of the students. In the International Trade Academy Association, Miss XXX motivated an increasing number of students to be involved in free intellectual inquiries regarding the global trade and economics. She initiated a series of activities such as debating contests, seminars, workshops and field trips where members discussed key events. She also invited leading scholars of the country as guest speakers to give lectures that considerably broadened the intellectual horizon of the members. As a result, their interest in learning international trade, finance and economics was greatly deepened and their academic performance as a whole was obviously improved. In addition, by organizing a number of sports activities such as basketball, tennis and swimming competitions, she helped to make students’ extracurricular life colorful. In addition, through those activities, she helped increase the cohesion of the members in group events and prepared them to be productive group members. I believe that at our university, Miss XXX succeeded in achieving all-round development both as a student and as a person.

6. Please comment on the rankings you have given and on any other factors which you believe should be drawn to the attention of the British Embassy Selection Committee in assessing the suitability of this candidate for the British Chevening Scholarships Programme for China.

I have ranked Miss XXX on the basis of her comprehensive performance in her peer group, which was her grade in the entire department that consisted of a total of 200 students. As supervisor of doctoral students and dean of the Department of International Trade, I have been impressed by Miss XXX because she stood quite apart from her peers. She has demonstrated strong intellectual caliber which can fully make her an outstanding Master’s student. I obtained my Master’s degree in economics from LSE and I was a visiting scholar to the Manchester University in 20XX. My academic experiences in the UK convince me that in this age of rapid changes pursuing international education in the UK is absolutely appropriate and necessary, especially for a career woman like Miss XXX who has accumulated many years of practical experiences in investment and in international collaborations. Miss XXX is bound a play an increasingly important role in the investment profession in China and your scholarship programme will definitely enable her to enhance her professionalism. I am sure that she will also significantly promote exchanges with China and the UK not only in finance and investment but also in culture. Therefore, I would like to offer my unqualified support to her in this present application.
