1 Describe the capacity in which you knew the applicant:

I am professor and supervisor of Master’s students in the field of political science at China XXX University. From Sept. 20XX to July 20XX, Ms. XXX undertook a degree programme in XXX at our university, leading to her LLB (Bachelor of Legal Letters) qualifications. During this programme, I had the honor of teaching her a couple of core courses, Political Systems of Western Countries, and China’s Political System. Throughout her programme, she kept consulting me about the issues she were interested in and as the most smart student in the class she came to my special attention and ever since her completion of the progrmamme she has been maintaining regular contacts with me and my long-time acquaintance with her can allow me to present a comprehensive account of her academic and extracurricular achievements.

2. Is the applicant still with your organization? Yes/No. If not, when did he/she leave?

After completing her course, Ms. XXX left our university and immediately found employment with XXX Property & Casualty Co., Ltd and has been working there ever since.

3. Please detail any personal circumstances which might affect the applicant’s performance on an intensive and demanding programme.

Prior to taking up our LLB programme, Ms. XXX was a student of English language and literature and did not have any legal foundation. Nevertheless, determined to transform from a student of English language to a career woman in law-related professions, she studied from the very fundamentals and with her perseverance and commitment she soon started to excel in her studies. Naturally, our programme was very intensive and challenging but the fact that Ms. XXX achieved an average grade of 87/100 in all the courses testified to her indisputable ability to high-level academic excellence in a demanding academic environment. I believe she will have little difficulty to excel in your future studies in the UK.

4. Describe the applicant’s strengths and weaknesses.

Ms. XXX’s greatest strengths lied in her determined efforts to pursue academic excellence and the ability to make that excellence possible. In my class, she was an active discussion participant and question raiser, exhibiting deeper insights into political and legal systems than many other students. I particularly liked her strong motivation in learning. Realizing that her future career might involve a multiplicity of challenges, she not only sought to develop outstanding English proficiency but also to accumulate broaden her horizon in law, political science, international relations, finance and other social sciences so as to be well equipped to cope with the rapidly changing world. She had the habit of reading latest technical literature to keep herself abreast with the more recent developments. Thanks to her powerful intelligence, the analyses she performed, either in group discussions or in her term papers, were original and perceptive. Throughout her programme, she consistently maintained a high level of diligence, which resulted in her winning the Top 4 ranking in the entire class.

Skillful in time-management, Ms. XXX could always find a perfect balance between her academic studies and extracurricular activities. By assuming some important positions in student organizations, she performed valuable social responsibilities. As class president and academics official of the departmental student union, she helped organize a series of campus events such as speech contest, debating contest and art shows that considerably enriched the campus life and cultural diversity. As a student leader, what’s more commendable about her was her superb talents in interpersonal communication that could always involve students in striving for common objectives through concerted efforts. She had pleasant personal traits that made her get on well with students and teachers. She was also a warm person who was always ready to help others. By performing her public duties, Ms. XXX honed her leadership skills and created immense cohesion among her fellow students, thus helping improve the welfare of all the students and achieve general progress. Even after her graduation, Ms. XXX has liked to discuss social issues with me and approach them from the institutional perspective, aspiring for an in-depth understanding of the structures and functions of those institutions, especially in present-day China which is undergoing critical social transformation. I feel that she is full of penetrating insights about those issues. I greatly appreciate her strong social concerns and am very touched by her strong commitment to work for China’s social progress. My deepest impression is that Ms. XXX is the kind of person who knows what she is doing and what she has to do in order to become the person she wants to be. She realizes that in her educational background the most serious deficiency is her lack of a systematic academic training in finance, insurance and management. Her greatest wish over the years is to make up for this weakness. Now that she has this wonderful potential opportunity, she is most eager to be eligible for it and through an outstanding programme in the UK may develop a sufficient knowledge foundation to promote her career progress. Through one-year life and study in the UK, she can deepen her understanding of British culture, the country and its people. Upon her return to China, she will definitely elevate her management skills and improve the level of international cooperation and exchanges.  

5. Please comment on any task, project or other situation in which the applicant has been involved which may demonstrate his or her potential a manager or a responsible team member?

One of a major annual event here at China XXX University is the Model United Nations competition, the winners would be qualified to participated in the Harvard Model United Nations event held in the U.S. Representing her school, Ms. XXX took part in one of such competitions and she worked on behalf of the International Red Cross. As team leader, she worked together with team members in discussing how to International Red Cross may collaborate with international NGOs and NOGs in individual countries to face global challenges in this rapidly changing world. To prepare a full-length report, she organized the team members in search for information and statistics concerning leading NGOs in China and the world. In their final report, they used detailed materials to explore feasible patterns for NGOs to participate in global efforts and face global challenges. For her important contributions, she was given the Best Position Award for the competition.

6. Please comment on the rankings you have given and on any other factors which you believe should be drawn to the attention of the British Embassy Selection Committee in assessing the suitability of this candidate for the British Chevening Scholarships Programme for China.

As far as I know, Ms. XXX has very clear goals about the future and works hard to realize her dreams. In her spare time, she likes to read Financial Times. She also told me that her priority is to develop a global perspective in analyzing the challenges and opportunities of the international business and financial market. In view of Ms. XXX’s outstanding academic excellence and professional abilities, I firmly believe she will maximize her potential to the fullest extent by undertaking the Chevening Scholarships Programme. As she works on the forefront of international cooperation with the British insurance profession, it is most suitable that she go to the UK to study and directly experience British insurance industry. I know she will definitely continue to work hard and do a great job in her proposed studies. Although not a diplomat, she will nevertheless become an “ambassador” of Sino-British insurance partnership. Therefore, she deserves to be accepted by your programme and your serious consideration of her application will be greatly appreciated.
