                   Motivation Letter / Personal Statement

Applicant: XXX Programme: PhD in Finance at XXX Finance Institute

Undertaking the world-class MBA program at Cambridge University and listening to the penetrating analysis of the complicated and elusive global financial market by the internationally renowned academics, I keep asking myself what this MBA means to me. Should I use the MBA program to hone my management knowledge skills with which to re-enter the business world to continue with business activities whose success or failure is primarily measured by profit and loss, or to seek a career of scholarly inquiries in which the free play of the mind and innovative research will help contribute to the development of finance as an academic discipline. This present application should now indicate my unequivocal option—to pursue academic excellence through the PhD in Finance at the XXX Finance Institute.

It is true that over the past five years I have been enjoying a successful professional career. As co-found a boutique investment bank XXX Cycle Investment Management Company, I devoted 3 entire years building and promoting our brand among global customers like KDB, Korea Resources, SK, etc. I was quite flexible in my thinking and had the ability to move seamlessly across different industry sectors. As exclusive financial advisor on various industries, especially the mining sector, I have successfully launched financing projects worth millions of USD. With those achievements, I joined another promising consumer company in China to facilitate its pre-IPO process. With great efforts, I have secured a second round of investment by a famous local venture capital. Moreover, since July 20XX, I have been working as investment manager at XXX Natural Commodity Company, China’s largest chain of organic products with over 300 retail stores across the country. I have advised on strategic business development and capital programs including equity funding, mergers and acquisitions, nationwide marketing schemes.

However, the academic world has a charm of its own. In 20XX, I succeeded in being a Chevening Scholar, sponsored by Chevening Scholarship Program (China). The program, launched in China for more than two decades by the British Foreign and Commonwealth Office, selects mid-level government officials or emerging business leaders in various industries to do postgraduate studies in the UK in an attempt to bring EU and China into closer economic ties. Among thousands of applicants, I became the sole scholarship winner from the private sector qualified for what is perhaps the most challenging program for Chevening scholars—a Cambridge MBA. Winning this rare opportunity for advanced academic studies has allowed me to discover my full potential for the highest level of academic excellence.

As a matter of fact, the pursuit of academic excellence has informed all my academic endeavours, not only in my current studies in the Cambridge MBA program, which also in my undergraduate program. In 20XX, as the best-performing student in the college entrance exam in my high school, I was admitted into University of International Business and Economics (UIBE), the most prestigious of its kind in China. In 20XX, I completed my Bachelor’s degree program in Economics, where I received intensive economics and finance studies, with a fairly decent GPA (82/100). But the most important outcome of my undergraduate studies was the significant development of research abilities. Whereas the rest of my classmates completed their Bachelor’s thesis in China, I completed my thesis in English. Entitled “An Analysis of the US-China Trade Imbalances and the Impacts”, the paper examines the conflicting arguments presented by both the Chinese government and the American government concerning the imbalance and explored how each government could address the problem and benefit from a balance trade relationship. Duly adapted and updated, the paper was published in a leading scholarly journal Foreign Investment in China (Issue 05/20XX), which indicates the extent of the academic level I have reached.

Even after completing my Bachelor’s program, I have remained keenly interested in research by following all the latest hot issues happening in Chinese and global financial market. One of the topics has been the intensely debated issue of the proper valuation of Chinese currency RMB. My observations and reflections led me to co-author a paper with a PhD student at Renmin University of China, on the topic “A Tentative Analysis of the Appreciation of RMB”. Contrary to the popular belief that the appreciation of the currency would prove fatally detrimental to China’s international trade, I propose that the appreciation, properly handled, would actually prove beneficial to the healthy and sustainable development of Chinese economy and contribute to global trade equilibrium. Through this research project, I have further enhanced my research calibre by developing original perspectives, supported by rigorous empirical analysis.

The Cambridge MBA program itself has allowed me to scale wholly new heights in my academic pursuit. In the intensive curriculum, I have been studying Microeconomics, Management Science, Corporate Finance, Financial Reporting, CVP Research Methods, Organizational Behavior, and Management Practice over the past semesters, with two electives—International Business and Globalization, and Advanced Financial Reporting. In the following semesters, I will study Strategy, Marketing, Managing Innovation Strategically, Operations Management, Financial Management, along with electives in Cases in Corporate Finance and others. The advanced coursework and the thought-provoking instructions by world-class professors have given me insights into economics, finance, and management. Many courses like corporate finance and operations management are heavily quantitative in nature; and the training in research methods and the brainstorming in group discussions are absolutely exciting as they are demanding. Interacting with the world’s best minds of faculty and students alike has made my learning experience simply memorable. Tapping my full academic potential, I have achieved an upper second class honors in my academic performance.

Studying in the UK, I have been exposed to many cutting-edge research topics and research methodologies, which have been the most fascinating part of the program. I realize how new methodologies and perspectives may help uncover fascinating implications of financial issues and how intellectually stimulating it is to do in-depth, exhaustive and ground-breaking analysis. In particular, I have grown interested in European financial market and its interactivity with China’s market, an important subject which has not been fully research as it deserves. Hence, I am determined to pursue your prestigious Ph.D. program and to make contributions in this field.

In my undergraduate program, I have taken a whole range of quantitative courses including Advanced Mathematics (I) & (II), Linear Algebra, Econometrics, Probability and Statistics. Of course, a good number of other courses overlap with quantitative knowledge and skills. Therefore, I deem myself fully qualified for your quantitative-intensive Ph.D. program. In addition, I am most encouraged to notice your special invitation for applications from women. I sincerely wish that my entry into your PhD program will not only allow me to contribute my unique Chinese backgrounds and perspectives to your program but also my unique scholarly insights as a woman researcher. Having studied carefully your faculty and their research interest, I would like to identify Prof. XXX as my potential supervisor and focus on such fields as international finance, open economy macroeconomics, and monetary economics. Impressed by his substantial research experiences, I have already been reading many of his recent papers and I hope to work together with him to perform truly innovative research. It is highly likely that my knowledge and experiences about the Chinese financial market can prove mutually enriching to our future collaborative research.

With my MBA degree from Cambridge Judge Business School and a PhD from the equally renowned XXX Finance Institute, plus in-depth insights into European financial market, I will be equipped with rare and unparalleled advantages to work as a high-level researcher in either the public sector or leading academic institutions in China. As a future finance professor, I will make unique academic contributions—by enhancing Chinese academia’s focus on European financial market and by expanding the composition of women scholars in China’s academic community in finance research. Therefore, I apply for your PhD program with strong motivation and I am looking forward to entering the program.
